The role of a School Counselor is to be available to provide support and guidance to all students and families. Counseling is offered to students in individual or small group settings, as appropriate, and consultation services are available for parents, staff and others, as needed and requested. Additional support is offered through the Student Support Team and Educational Support Team processes.
Students in kindergarten through fourth grade participate weekly in sequential, research-based classroom guidance activities designed to help them gain competence in: understanding self and others; establishing and maintaining positive peer relationships; developing effective communication skills and cultural/multi-cultural awareness; setting goals and using sequential steps in decision making; employing problem solving techniques and coping strategies.; utilizing strategies to gain and maintain self control; and use of decision making and refusal skills to promote personal health and safety. Classes, discussions, and field trips are planned for upper grade classes around career awareness, educational planning, and specific issues or concerns.
